You may be wondering why you hear a fan running in your home even when your thermostat is set to Off. The fan you are hearing is your Air Cycler, which your home builder installed in your attic to help improve the indoor air quality in your home.
New homes are now being built much more air-tight than the homes of the past, meaning that there is less air getting in and out of your home through cracks, crevices, windows, etc. This is great when it comes to insulating your home, however, this change tends to decrease the quality of your indoor air. Because there is no way for air to go in and out of your home, the pollutants (for example carbon dioxide) and volatile organic compounds (cleaners, carpet, paint, aerosols, etc.) are becoming trapped in your home with no way to escape. This is where your Air Cycler comes into the picture.
When the Air Cycler turns on, it is bringing fresh air into your home, helping to dilute the pollutants and volatile organic compounds which are trapped in your home. It is not bringing so much air that it will affect the temperature in your home, so there’s no need to worry about that! There is a setting that allows the air cycler to run only during specific hours each day so as not to bother you while you are resting.
