What is Reverse Osmosis?
Reverse Osmosis (RO) is a treatment process for water that uses pressure to remove contaminants from water. It works by forcing the molecules through a semipermeable membrane from a more concentrated solution to a less concentrated solution. Contaminants larger than water molecules cannot pass through the membrane, which is how these contaminants are filtered out of the water. Reverse Osmosis removes chemicals (lead, chlorine, fluoride, pesticides), pharmaceuticals, salts, microorganisms, and viruses. RO was actually invented by the Navy to make seawater into drinking water for submarines. Reverse Osmosis takes out the largest spectrum of contaminants, more than any other filtration method.
How does Reverse Osmosis work?
The RO system connects to your cold water system. In the RO systems that we offer, the water flows through multiple filters. Filters usually include a carbon filter, a RO membrane, and the final filter cartridges.
- The carbon filter removes contaminants like chlorine, fluoride, and pesticides.
- After the carbon filter, the water is pushed through the semipermeable membrane which filters out smaller contaminants down to 1/10,000 of a micron. All of the impure water flows out into the drain and the clean water flows to a storage tank.
- The final filters filter out any odors from the storage tank and flow to your faucet.
The RO systems that we offer can be installed under your sink and are made to save on space. These systems can produce up to 60 gallons of water per day and are outfitted with an automatic shutoff valve for easy changing of the filters.
