Why is my Faucet Leaking?

Nobody likes dealing with plumbing problems, especially leaks — they can be a huge inconvenience. Leaks not only waste water but can lead to costly repairs if left unchecked. If you’ve noticed that your faucet is leaking, don’t panic! From the Sierra Air Conditioning & Heating plumbing team, here are five common causes of plumbing leaks and what you can do about them:

1. Loose Washer

A loose washer is one of the simplest causes of a leaky faucet and is usually the easiest to fix. Unscrew the handle and check if the washer is loose or worn out. If so, replace it with a new washer or tighten it if possible. Another possible solution is to use plumber’s tape on the threads before re-installing the handle.

2. Worn Out Seals

Over time seals will become brittle and break down, leading to a leaky faucet. To fix this issue, you’ll need to remove any corroded parts, clean up any debris from inside the faucet, and then replace the seals with new ones before reassembling everything again.

3. Corroded Parts

Corrosion on metal parts can also cause your faucet to leak due to wear and tear over time. To fix this issue, you’ll need to replace all corroded parts with fresh ones that match your faucet model exactly for them to fit properly without any problems in the future.

4. Damaged O-rings

O-rings are rubber rings that prevent water from leaking out of your pipes when they come into contact with one another at joints or connections in your plumbing system. If these o-rings get damaged or worn out due to age or frequent use, they won’t be able to do their job correctly and will result in a leaking faucet. To fix this issue, look for replacement o-rings that fit your specific faucet model before replacing them yourself, or call a professional plumber for assistance.

5. Broken Diverter Valve

The diverter valve controls which way water flows through your pipes (either hot or cold). If this valve breaks down due to age or wear and tear, it won’t be able to control which way water flows properly anymore. As a result, your faucet may start leaking and cause other issues, such as low pressure from the tap when running hot water only (for example). To repair this issue, you’ll need professional help from an experienced plumber who can accurately diagnose the problem and replace any broken parts accordingly for an effective fix that lasts long term!
